Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Waymo Moves Closer to Launching Robotaxi Service in London

Waymo Moves Closer to Launching Robotaxi Service in London:

Autonomous driving company Waymo has begun testing its self-driving vehicles on public roads in London, marking a major step toward launching its first commercial robotaxi service in the city later this year.
The company, owned by Alphabet, has been preparing for this rollout for months. Initially, Waymo deployed human-driven vehicles to map London’s streets before transitioning to autonomous testing. Currently, around 100 all-electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles equipped with Waymo’s self-driving technology are operating across a 100-square-mile area, each with a safety driver onboard.

Before fully driverless operations can begin, the UK government must finalize regulations for autonomous vehicle trials. Waymo has stated it is working closely with regulators to ensure a safe and scalable rollout across the city.
Co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov highlighted that the company’s core AI system is adapting well to local driving conditions, with current testing focused on refining performance and handling region-specific challenges. These trials are a key milestone toward achieving fully driverless rides.

Waymo is also investing in the UK by hiring local talent and setting up multiple autonomous vehicle service centers in London. The company is collaborating with emergency services as it lays the groundwork for expanding its operations across Europe.
Following its usual rollout strategy, Waymo is expected to move from supervised testing to fully driverless trials, initially allowing employees to use the service before opening it to the public. However, its planned 2026 launch will depend on regulatory approvals from the UK government.

Waymo’s presence in the UK dates back to 2019, when it acquired Latent Logic, a startup from Oxford University specializing in imitation learning for autonomous driving simulations. This acquisition also led to the establishment of an engineering hub in Oxford, strengthening Waymo’s footprint in the region.
